First Session – Intervention Tutoring

I thought I’d take the time to outline what the first session looks like because it’s different from every other session. This session is all about assessment. If you’re a reading or spelling student the assessment is 5 parts and could take anywhere from the whole 45 minutes to 15 minutes depending on you. If you’re a math student I will be giving you a math assessment that we will be going through together. I will ask you if you could tackle this math problem on a test in school and you just tell me if you can or not. If you’re not a reading or math student we’ll just have a conversation of where it is in that subject that you struggle the most. With any assessment I might ask you if you tell me what you think you struggle with so I can get a better idea specifically.

How things usually go…(obviously a tad different if it’s online)

  1. Let me know when you get here and I’ll meet you outside.
  2. Come in and meet my dog (if you want) and I’ll show you the classroom.
  3. I will hand the parent the contract and answer any questions you have.
  4. Parents will exit and go relax in my living room while they fill out the contract.
  5. I will start assessing your student and bring them out when they are done.
  6. After the session I will either tell the parents how the student did if the results speak for themselves or I will send the parents an email with a better explanation of what the plan is from here.
